Most of the Modern fakes are made in the factories in Hebei, the birth place of Ding wares.   As a result of numerous analysis of the Ding sherds and experimental firings, the factories have identified the main ingredients to imitate the old Ding.  Hence, visually the new and old Ding wares look alike. To differentiate the genuine from the fakes, it is important to pay attention to the following 4 aspects:
  • on the genuine pieces, there are usually tear drops  and  black particles found in the glaze. The new pieces have too even tone and smooth glaze which are clear with no black particles.  Please refer to below sherd:
  • on the genuine pieces, there are usually spots near the foot or the base where glaze are missing or thin.  On the new pieces, they are evenly glazed.
  • pay attention to the way the edge of the foot is cut.  On a genuine piece, it would appear like in the below sherd.  The line of the edge is sharp but with unevenness as shown in the picture. On the new pieces, the line appear too regular without the unevenness.
  • for pieces with carved, incised or moulded design, compare them with those on the genuine pieces and you would notice that the new ones usually appear stiff and weak.   You could only get a "feel" of this by serving the designs on existing genuine pieces.  The pictures of the sherds I have provided may be of some help as reference.
